today in class we talked about whether Captain Pike is better off in captivity of the aliens or in his wheelchair. The conclusion was that he is better off in the 'wheelchair' because he would be able to keep his thoughts to himself.
But when he was in captivity, even though they could read most of his mind, he was still able to fight back and communicate verbally with whomever he chose to. However in his current state, his ability to communicate in any way is severely limited, which must be frustrating for him. In this situation, he probably wishes someone could read his mind. Personally, I think that he is better off in captivity because it seems that one of the defining traits of humans is interaction.
what do you think is better, wheelchair or confinement, explain?

I agree that he is better off in the so-called confinement. Because Pike is so confined already in his state-- living in a wheelchair, unable to communicate more than basic 'yes' 'no' answers-- being on Talos Four with the aliens would grant him more freedom. Even if it was a false reality, Pike would think that he was once again young and healthy, he would be able to do things that him in his real state would be unable to do. The argument against this was that Pike's thoughts would be invaded-- sifted through by another being. But in comparison with absolutely no communication, not being able to communicate even the smallest thought to those around you, I think that the former is the better alternative.
ReplyDeleteAlso, one must consider the type of person Pike himself is. He was a Starfleet Captain, a man used to being able to do what he wanted, say what he wanted, go where he wanted. For him to be trapped in a state of total reliance on others, unable to go anywhere on his own, unable to make his opinions heard, would be a miserable life. Isn't it better, more humane, for one to allow him to be able to be happy again?
I also think he is better off in confinement. The aliens could understand Pike better than the humans could simply because they could just read his mind. Pike would be able to share more of his knowledge with the alien race than with the humans. Additionally, the aliens could make Pike's life more worthwhile since they can read into his mind and fulfill his desires through their illusions. Ultimately, his life would be better because he would get to form closer bonds with people.
